A Brief History

Burford House first appears in history at the time of Edward the Confessor as one of the manors of the Norman-Saxon Richard le Scrob and was then known as Scrob’s Castle. Early in the 14th Century it became the property of the Cornwall family where it remained for the next 400 years.

In 1720, the debt-ridden Baron Francis Cornwall sold the dilapidated castle to William Bowles the proprietor of Vauxhall Glassworks, who demolished the castle and built the present Burford House in 1728.

The House and Estate became the property of the Treasure brothers who transformed the Georgian House and the seven acres of ornamental gardens. The beautiful gardens are now tended to by a group of wonderful volunteers the
‘Burford House Garden Angels’.

Originally part of the estate, Burford Church can be found next door to Burford House and is still available today for weddings in this idyllic location.

Today the classical elegance of Burford House & Gardens makes it the perfect location for your Wedding, Celebration or Special Event.
